Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the research Initiative 'Reshaping the Collectible: When Artworks Live in the Museum aims to transform the way the museum meets the challenges of the stewardship of works at the forefront of artistic practice today.

This is your chance to work with one of the most globally important art institutions on ground-breaking research into the management of contemporary art. Working alongside pioneering practitioners and thinkers you will make a significant contribution by contributing to a major research project and supporting members of the Registrars team to contribute their research to the project by working as a Collection Registrar within the acquisitions and loans team.

As an experienced registrar, you will carry out research into current and emerging practice for the management of particularly challenging contemporary art, and critically examine acquisition models, documentation protocols, questions of ethics, authenticity, valuation and decision making within the museum. Working with the wider Collections Management Department and Project team you will develop, test and communicate new recommendations arising from this research. In addition your experience will enable you to work flexibly as part of the wider Registrars team, managing the movement of artworks, supporting Tate’s programmes, creating documentation, verifying data and ensuring the adherence to correct standards and procedures, and compliance with all relevant legal requirements and international conventions. As an exceptional communicator you will contribute to the dissemination of the project, by writing authoritative texts for a specialist readership as well as accessible texts for a general public and developing material for a range of formats including online text, didactic displays and online video.

Your considerable experience of working as a Collection Registrar in a major art museum, together with experience of conducting academic or practice-based research and excellent professional knowledge are essential, as is your dynamic, generous and flexible approach to working with a team. You will have an impressive grasp of legal and ethical considerations around the acquisition and stewardship of contemporary art and significant experience of working to national and international museum standards. As the role involves collaborations with a broad range of participants across a number of tasks, you will be able to deliver meticulous organisation and attention to detail. Above all, you will be highly engaged with the challenges of managing collections of cutting edge contemporary art, curious about the questions this raises for the field and driven to achieve with the ability to use your own initiative.
